Highway 407 Toll Charges and the Benefits of being Discharged from Bankruptcy

Highway 407 Toll Charges and the Benefits of being Discharged from Bankruptcy

On December 19th 2013, the Ontario Court of Appeal held that the Registrar of Motor Vehicles cannot deny vehicle permits to individuals an account of debts owed to the ETR Concession Company Limited. So in simple terms if you owed toll charges for the use of the 407, and then filed for bankruptcy, the bankruptcy would not only capture the debt, but it would also preclude the ETR from blocking the renewal of your vehicle permits. Prior to the appeal decision of December 19th 2013, individuals who were discharged from bankruptcy were unable to renew their vehicle permits even the though the 407 debts were technically extinguished by the bankruptcy.
